Knowledge Management

The Knowledge Management System is the foundation we need to help more kids in more ways.

Tapping into the clinical knowledge of our skillful counsellors and informed by evidence-based counselling practice and the latest research, the Knowledge Management project will create a digital library of these assets and house them in an easy to access counselling service dashboard.

While this enhanced counselling knowledge enables service enhancements it will also further other important goals – the transformation of the kids’ website, introducing e-learning modules for new and experienced counsellors and an opportunity to foster important public education partnerships.

The Futures Realization team has now written new and enhanced content for 11 of a total of 50 topics, including topics of critical importance – suicide, self-injury and sexual abuse.

Kids Website

With the addition of a kids’ writer to the Futures Realization team, work has begun on the adaptation of counselling tip sheets into kid-friendly and age appropriate content for the seven priority topics in Phase One of the project. 

Phase one has now launched and kids will be able to select a topic from among 50 topics of concern to young people and move through the site on a topic-specific basis – from web posts to tip sheets to therapeutic self-care and resiliency building tools – gaining as much information as they want or need. Each step in the development of the kids’ website is informed by the input of the Counselling team and a therapeutic counselling outcome is at the foundation of everything we do.

Research and Public Education

As part of our mission, vision and values Kids Help Phone believes it is important to contribute to the awareness and public dialogue on children’s issues and to the development of policies and practices that improve the well-being of kids in Canada. 

Futures Picture 5In 2009, Kids Help Phone provided a button on its kids’ website to link to a cyberbullying survey being conducted by the world renowned Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto in collaboration with academics at the University of Calgary. Survey data from kids across Canada was gathered to help the About Kids Health program at Sick Kids develop a new understanding about cyberbullying and its implications on kids’ health.

In March 2009, Dr. Janice Currie, VP Counselling Services at Kids Help Phone, participated in a panel discussion called Cyberbullying: Helping your child negotiate the risks, Dr. Currie joined fellow panelists Sgt. Robyn MacEachern (Ontario Provincial Police), Andrea Slane (Faculty of Law, University of Toronto) and Tanya Deurvorst Smith (Hospital for Sick Children).

Each year Kids Help Phone releases a critical issue report to advance understanding of a critical or emerging topic of importance to kids. In 2009 Kids Help Phone will publish its latest report titled Online Gaming: Child’s Play or Obsession?

Reports are published to the media, social service, academic and education partners, as well as to our supporters and corporate partner organizations.

Two nights earlier, she’d been placed in a foster home, but didn’t feel comfortable talking to her foster parents yet. With gentle prompting, Megan began to tell her story. Her feelings were agonizingly mixed. Despite everything, she missed her mom’s bedtime stories and the familiarity of home.
